This is one of the most important decisions you'll make when planning both your budget and your timeline.  So what's the difference?  Typically around the world tickets (RTW Tickets) will make your trip a bit cheaper as you select your major cities and continents up front and stick with them for the duration of the trip.  You can make changes but only a certain amount are allowed without costing you. 

My preference is to go it on your own.  You may lose a little security that having a travel route that is locked in stone will bring you but the flexibility you'll gain will more than make up for it.  Within only a few weeks of hitting the road I found that my rough travel plan had already started to change.  I learned of new and interesting places to go by talking with other travelers and these are places I would have had to miss if I'd had a RTW Ticket.  

When would I recommend using a RTW Airline Ticket?

If you have a strict timeline for your travels a RTW Airline Ticket could be a better and less expensive option for you.  Since time already limits your flexibility you won't miss much and the savings could certainly add up.  This type of ticket is also good for travelers that plan to complete their trip in under a year and want to visit many continents.  Most airlines limit the duration of your travels to a year so make sure you're aware of the restrictions of your particular ticket before you buy.
